Well done Mark for getting a Derek McInnes interview at probably the most important time in Hearts history as league leaders with 5 games to go.
Well done Derek for fronting up so honestly and openly to Mark’s questions.
We hear your guests Mark, through this season stating that they were too young to recall 86 as well as 65…. But they recall their fathers’ reminiscences of those sadly failed challenges!!
I was approaching 10 years old and remember the unashamed delight at Flora Stevensons scroll in Comely Bank when the title was won. Hearts supporters played Hibs supporters every break time in the playground and I can’t recall a day for weeks after the Title win that the team of Hearts fans lost to the Hibs fans… buoyed by a higher level that bragging rights bring you in the City.
I moved to live in Israel just a few months after the Title win and proudly boasted of the team I supported back in Scotland….. and that they were Champions.
1962 for me when I was back in Scotland was a wonderful milestone for the Club….. the Willie Bauld testimonial v Sheffield United. 2-2 on the night as we bid farewell to the King. He sadly was injured and didn’t play but took the applause from the crowd as he sat with Tommy Walker in the dug out!
Then we get to the 1965 trauma when we needed a draw or even a 2-1 loss in the final game with Kilmarnock to capture the league title! I had no doubt we would win the title that day , especially as in the previous big Killie game at Hampden we had beaten the 1-0 to win the League Cup. 0-2 and we’re were beaten at home in front of 40,000 fans!
There are people who lived through the Conn Bauld and Wardhaugh days. … and who saw Dave Mackay in maroon.
Why not put a shout it to those that still directly recall those days.
SATF… the best Hearts podcast on the air!!!
