I don’t normally write in but listened to the podcast today and a lot of what Mark said today about his fat he resonated with me. I was at the Ross County game on Saturday and took along my grandson who is 4 years old to his first Hearts match along with my son-in-law. He had a great day, lots of photos, a message at half-time on the big screen. I gave him one of my Hearts scarfs and he went to bed that night with it so I think we have another Hearts supporter for life. We were in the new stand so entered via McLeod Street where is went to my first match at the old stand in the old enclosure v Kilmarnock in 1967…we won 1-0 I think. Anyway my Dad who took me and my brother to Hearts matches regularly as youngsters, sadly passed away in July 2002 at the age of 62. However my brother and I went to the first home match of that season a couple of weeks later on 11/8/2002 when a certain Mark de Vries managed to score 4 goals as we pumped the Hibees. My brother and I were talking after the match that our Dad must have been looking down as smiling at that result and it truly helped us with our grief at the time. Sorry for going on a bit but Marks story was very powerful and shows the importance of this football club through generations and I am hopeful that my grandson will have as much pleasure and camaraderie that I have had as a Jambo.
Hi Kevin,
Thank you very much for your message, it was shared with the group.
I’m very sorry that your dad was taken at 62, should’ve had a few more years of family and football left in him. But as you say, I’m sure he was looking down with happiness and pride at moments such as the de Vries game and many since.
Your grandson is the next generation I’ve got every faith that he’ll be enjoying some brilliant times as a Jambo, alongside friends and family, over the coming years.
Keep your dad’s memory alive with all the stories you have of your time together, including those going along to see the famous JTs.
Take care!
Laurie
