Do you think that some supporters expected a bit too much from Glenn Whelan against Motherwell? It was Whelan’s first match, and he wasn’t all that regular in the second half of last season, having been replaced by Hourihane and John McGinn, of all people…so personally I wasn’t expecting him to be in peak match fitness and sharpness first time around. Whelan appears to carry a very professional attitude to his craft, so it probably annoyed him more than anyone else that he was out of sorts against the fruit salads. Taking that into account, others around him (yes you, Damour and Clare) should have taken more responsibility.
He didn’t hang about worrying over it though. Fast forward a week and a bit, and Whelan’s bossing midfield in his second match and first Edinburgh derby. Mind you, he might have had a bit of a laugh at Josh Vela’s “tackling” technique. I’ve seen more wallop from those soft bats the American kiddies use for baseball practice.
The only other item I can think of from the top of my swede is…what do people think of the Ikpeazu / Washington situation? If they are ever fully fit at the same time, is it a lone striker chosen according to suitability against each opposition, or can they fit into the same team? Washington played as an inside left / second striker for Q.P.R., but that may affect how Walker and Naismith are positioned. Again, a huge asterisk next to the phrase “fitness permitting”.
