Episode 46 – Statement Special

It’s an extra long Friday night statement special, as Laurie and Mark discuss the recent statement from Ann Budge and assess the current situation at the club.

Could have called this episode ‘Do The Right Thing’ I was half expecting Laurie to start with a monologue like Samuel L Jackson (as DJ ‘Mr Snr Love Daddy’) in the morning after the riot in Spike Lee’s film.

“My people, my people, what can I say; say what I can. I saw it but didn’t believe it; I didn’t believe what I saw. Are we gonna live together? Together are we gonna live?” ?

First time listener and enjoyed the constructive debate. The key point being missed here by the bulk of fans is that we do not have as strong a squad as we think. There is a distinct lack of goals (i.e. in terms of career track record) across the squad and I am afraid there tends to be a mathematical correlation in terms of team goals scored.

Some of the players are ok individually but we don’t have the right blend – a distinct lack of creativity and goal scoring instinct. Both our main strikers have a track record of scoring <10 goals a season. You can accommodate this if you have goal scoring midfielders (a la Paul Hartley in his prime) but we patently do not. Whelan and Damour are good holding midfielders but will not sort our goal scoring problem. Ultimately you need to have a clear goal scoring strategy and I am struggling to see what ours is.

Hi Andy, glad you enjoyed the show. That’s a fair point to be honest, one that I’d quite like to touch upon at some point. I definitely agree on the lack of strategy about how we approach matches, which we’ve discussed a few times before.
